Whatever. I don’t care that Valentine’s Day is an invented holiday for Hallmark. Blah blah blah.

I totally think Valentine’s Day is great.  What’s wrong with an excuse to have a nice evening with someone?  I don’t even buy Hallmark cards.  And even if I did, I probably wouldn’t lose sleep over it.  Not that there’s anything wrong with feeling morally flummoxed about the whole thing.  Good for you.

For our first Valentine’s Day Marcus and I made potato gnocchi.  Notice, I used the verb “made”, not “buy”.  This was a labor of love.  I’m talking boiled potatoes, pureed in a food processor, kneaded with flour, rolled out into long cylinders and then cut individually.  Maybe more labor intensive than necessary.  Sometimes store bought is just more worth it.  We also made a tomato sauce that came highly recommended from Marcella Hazan’s dearly loved “The Essentials of Italian Cooking”.

But really Valentine’s Day is about the dessert.  We had port poached pears (ooohhh alliteration!) with lavender honey ice cream and oreo cream cheese ice cream.  Poaching sounds so fancy but it’s almost embarrassingly easy–you just let it simmer.  And the color is so gorgeous.  Everything should be poached in wine!  Cereal. Eggs. Shoes. Pajamas. Hair.

Ingredients:

4 Bosc Pears

1 cup Port

3/4 cup sugar

2 strips of orange peel

2 strips of lemon peel

1 cinnamon stick

2 cups of water

ice cream for serving

1. in a medium pot combine the port, water, zest, cinnamon and sugar and cook at medium heat for about 10 minutes

2. in the meantime, trim 1/4 of an inch from the bottom of the pears and peel them

3. add the pears to the pot and bring the whole thing to a boil

4. lower heat to simmer and leave for 1 hour, stirring occasionally to make sure that all gets cooked through

Little Dom’s

Marcus and I had a date night!  Doesn’t that sound exciting?  I can confirm this for you.  It was exciting.  We went to Little Dom’s on Hillhurst.  Marcus made the comment that it looked like a seaside East coast Italian restaurant.  It reminded him of Providence.  We sat at the bar because they had reservations booked through 10 pm but I think we both enjoyed the casualness of the seating arrangement so that worked out just fine.  Marcus made friendly loose chat with the people on both sides of us.  His aptness for social situations never fails to amaze me.  While my reaction to overly cozy seating arrangements would be to keep more contained, to be even more conscious of the barriers of personal space, Marcus sees it as polite to create a more communal environment.  I think it is safe to say that Marcus is a much warmer person than me.

We shared a bottle of wine.

Appetizer: Fish Crudo with lemon and rosemary

My Entree: Salmon with fennel

Marcus’ Entree: Pappardelle with peas and ricotta

I’m sorry for the terrible photo. It doesn’t do the food justice.

It was an enormously enjoyable evening, partially for the meal and partially for the company.

Because a tub growing among trees and alfredo flavored gelato is not amazing enough, Marcus took me to an adorable Italian deli.  With the sort of bravado that I can’t even begin to approach, Marcus requested two sandwiches, the filling choices deferred to the expert discretion and taste of the man pictured above.  This man knew his Italian meats.  I wouldn’t have been surprised if someone told me that he never leaves his deli counter, that he sleeps there and when they turn the lights off in the store he leans his head against the glass case and uses a log a salami as a pillow.  When I asked to take his picture he responded, “Yes, people take my picture all the time” in an almost tired tone, as if he finds his meat celebrity boring at this point.

What was confidently handed off to us were two sandwiches absolutely dripping with spicy meats, olive oil, and provolone cheese.  These we consumed happily with soup and a bitter Italian soda.

Squid Ink Pasta and Balsamic Glazed Cipolline Onions

Filed under: home cooking, italian — saehee @ 4:16 pm

The first time I had squid ink pasta was in Seoul about four years ago and ever since then I haven’t found another squid ink pasta that has matched it.  I think in Seoul they even put squid ink in the sauce.  I found a dried squid ink pasta at the Silverlake Cheese Store the other day ($11.99–a little pricey).  A little fresh parsley, parmesan reggiano, red pepper, thyme, and olive oil was all it really needed. The squid ink wasn’t as pronounced in the taste as I would have liked, maybe its the brand.  More than the pasta, I think I was enamored with the balsamic glazed onions with thyme.
Simple Squid Ink Pasta:
squid ink pasta
a handful of fresh chopped parsley
dried red pepper flakes
4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
2 sprigs of thyme
1 tablespoon minced garlic
handful of parmesan reggiano cheese
salt and pepper to taste
1. cook the pasta in heavily salted water, al dente
2. drain the pasta
3. add garlic and olive oil into a large fry pan
4. add thyme
5. add pasta and red pepper flakes
6.  salt and pepper to taste
7. plate and add parsley and cheese

Tomato Basil Pasta

1 cup of cherry tomatoes (quartered)
a handful of chopped basil leaves
parmesan
angel hair pasta
extra virgin olive oil
salt and pepper to taste
this is one of favorite pastas, partially because it’s ridiculously simple.  the only thing you have to do it chop the ingredients and mix together, adding  a healthy amount of olive oil.  having a basil plants comes in handy.

Red Wine Pasta & Heirloom Tomato Caprese

Filed under: home cooking, italian, pasta — saehee @ 1:18 am

I’ve committed myself to cooking more often in order to save money.  I’ve made this red wine pasta a few times before and the results have always been pretty good.  I used good old $1.99 Charles Shaw and all the leftover vegetables in my refrigerator for what turned out to be a pretty hearty meal.  We also made a caprese salad with basil from my new basil plant and some heirloom tomatoes from Trader Joe’s ($3.29 for a small box!).

Here’s the recipe for the pasta is you are interested.  Sorry about the measurements, I generally eyeball everything:
two handfuls of mushrooms
4 garlic cloves
handful of parsley
6-7 leaves of basil
olive oil
a pad of butter
romano cheese
parmesan cheese
salt and pepper, to taste
1. cook the pasta halfway in salted water
2. drain and boil the pasta until al dente in wine. pasta should turn dark red. drain and put aside
3. roast garlic
4. sautee mushrooms and roasted garlic in a large pan with olive oil
5. add butter and pasta
6. add parsley, basil, and cheese.  mix everything together
7. salt and pepper to taste
