It took me four years to figure out that I liked San Diego and then I moved to LA.  It’s been a little more than two years and I’ve settled into Los Angeles quite comfortably but more and more often I think of San Diego and how specifically transitional I felt while living there.

This weekend I drove down to San Diego for Felipe’s birthday and it was the highlight of my week.  I drove down with Nancy and there was something pleasant and familiar about the drive and there was something vaguely significant about Nancy and I driving down there together.  At one point Nancy looked to the ocean and felt surprised that she had never looked at the ocean on this particular stretch of beach in the dark.  It felt like a story.

Marinara Pizza

Would you believe me if I said I really disliked pizza for the bulk of my youth?  I think in high school I went about two years without eating pizza.  I just didn’t see the point.  I blame this on the misfortune that is Pizza Hut/Domino’s/Papa John’s. But I’m all grown up now! Good pizza exists. In fact, it seems like there’s been a whole bunch of excellent pizza in my life lately.  Pizzeria Mozza. Village Pizzeria. Il Capriccio Pizza. And now Pizzeria Bruno.

I went down to San Diego today to give myself a little working space to re-structure my thesis.  I felt I needed distance from Los Angeles.  I rewarded my hard work with dinner with Felipe & Christina.  Really, getting work done in San Diego was just an excuse to see them

This weekend I went down to San Diego to see my friends Felipe and Christina who have recently moved into their first apartment together.  It’s been ages since I’ve been to Cantina Mayahuel and going back makes me nostalgic for the days of Wilson Ave (hi prayer, nancy, albert, joseph).  Unfortunately their chicken mole (possibly the best mole I’ve ever had) was not available that day but I ordered the Saturday special-Yucatan seafood stew.  The stew was made up mostly of shrimp and scallops over rice and beans in a light broth.  When I think of stew, I think of something thick and chunky but this was quite light.  I like.  Still, I think I would have preferred the mole.
