Sam is a published writer!!  This is amazing. It’s barely been 3 months since graduation and she is a real-life writer.  This gives me faith that people appreciate good writing, that there’s a place for really truly beautiful things.

We went to Good Girl Dinette to celebrate and had crispy tofu rice cakes, which Sam called, “the best things ever”, and bun and curry.  But food is besides the point.  Sam is published!

Grace had her farewell party today in Laguna Beach.  She’s leaving to teach in Korea for a year.  I don’t know how or when this happened?  Grace is an absolute touchstone in my life.  I feel a little devastated that I won’t be able to see her for so long.  Tomorrow we’re going to have some one-on-one time but for today we had a big beach potluck to wish her bon voyage.  I brought a lemon blueberry loaf adapted from Smittenkitchen.

Lemon Blueberry Loaf

1 1/2 cup all purpose flour

1 cup greek yogurt

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

zest of 3 lemons

3 extra large eggs (I used 3 1/2 large eggs)

1 1/2 cups blueberries (preferably fresh but all I had was frozen and well, that worked too)

1 cup sugar

1/2 vegetable or canola oil

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

for the syrup:

1 1/2 tablespoons sugar

1/3 cup lemon juice

1. preheat oven to 350

2. combine in a medium bowl the flour, baking powder, and salt

3. whisk together eggs, oil, vanilla extract, lemon zest, and greek yogurt

4. fold in the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients in 3 separate additions

5. toss the blueberries with 1 tablespoon of flour and gently fold into batter

6. pour into a greased and flour loaf pan and bak for 1 hour

7. in the meantime combine the ingredients for the syrup in a saucepan and heat until the sugar has dissolved

8. unmold the cake and poke holes across the top with a toothpick and brush the lemon syrup over the top of the cake

It took me four years to figure out that I liked San Diego and then I moved to LA.  It’s been a little more than two years and I’ve settled into Los Angeles quite comfortably but more and more often I think of San Diego and how specifically transitional I felt while living there.

This weekend I drove down to San Diego for Felipe’s birthday and it was the highlight of my week.  I drove down with Nancy and there was something pleasant and familiar about the drive and there was something vaguely significant about Nancy and I driving down there together.  At one point Nancy looked to the ocean and felt surprised that she had never looked at the ocean on this particular stretch of beach in the dark.  It felt like a story.

Nikki Darling is now one of my favorite eating buddies.  She has been talking about Golden Deli in San Gabriel since graduation and we’ve only just managed to make it out there.  Apparently this is Jonathan Gold’s favorite Vietnamese restaurant.  I have never ever ever seen cherimoya served as a drink.  I have never had egg rolls that good.  I want to go now. again. Thank you for taking me Nikki!

A Delicious Brunch Does Nothing To Soften The Blow

One of the most fortuitous things to come out of graduate school was meeting my dear dear friend Sam.  I think we may have crossed a few bridges together, more than a few actually.

Earlier this week I found out that she’s leaving town until August which was news I was entirely unprepared for.  August might as well be a moon away.

Today we had a good bye brunch together at Square One and I left the meal feeling melancholy and a little out of sorts.  I don’t cast a wide net when it comes to friends, partially because I don’t think I know how to love my friends just a little.  I am broad armed and invested wholly in the friendships I have.  Taking Sam out of this equation for the length of two months is upsetting.

I don’t doubt that things will fall back into place easily enough when she comes back but she will be missed terribly in the meantime.

Dessert Workshop (you know, like a writing workshop but with dessert)

I love my friends.  Tonight was so wonderful.

Let me back track a little.

I’m exhausted–like have never been so exhausted in all my life, so sleep deprived that I feel drunk, started shaking in the candy aisle of a CVS at 8 in the morning, working at 4:30 a.m. in the gross Butler Building computer lab, eyes burning exhausted.  But here’s the amazing part.  Are you ready for this?

MY THESIS IS DONE!

YES YES YES YES YES!!!!

I’m doing a little dance right now.  It’s true.

Another wonderful thing:  I had Nikki, Sam, Nancy, and Lan come over tonight for a dessert workshop.  I wanted them to try a few desserts I’m experimenting with and they were so wonderful and considerate with their suggestions.   They took note of everything, taking bites before and after cakes had absorbed their sauces, carefully analyzing the viscosity of my coconut caramel.  And what’s more is that they did this even though Sam and Nikki have a thesis due, Nancy had to drive through LA traffic right after tutoring, and Lan has to be up early for work.  Seeing these fantastic people felt like just the invigoration I was in desperate need of.

Afterwards we went to Ganda Thai.  Why is Thai food especially good after 9 p.m.?

I want this all the time.  Dessert first.  Involved conversations about cake density and psychic predictions that have and haven’t come true.  Friends that I adore.

okay, now I have to sleep because i might die if i don’t.  goodnight,

Tasty Masochism-The Orochon Spicy Ramen Challenge

Filed under: Japanese, friends — saehee @ 2:32 am

Today Janice, Nancy, and I embarked on the spicy ramen challenge at Orochon.  We had to finish an enormous bowl of ramen in 30 minutes.  The noodles were totally do-able but the broth felt like a cat was clawing up my throat.  The broth had what had to be a cup of raw jalapenos and every spoonful had mounds of red pepper.

we tried to counter the spice by ordering cucumbers and rice.  I think they helped quite a bit.

we immediately went out for frozen yogurt which i think is probably the only reason i’m not in the throws of pain right now.  remarkably, I feel fine.  actually, i’m pretty hungry.

my frozen yogurt is the one on the left…clearly there is a disparity in the amount of yogurt i eat compared to the amount lan and nancy eat

IMG_0037

There’s a lot of things I adore.  Most of them are edible.  But also high on my list are Lan and Nancy.  If they were edible, I might eat them but as they are not or at least they’d object to be eaten, I’ll settle for eating with them.  I’ve had dinner with them twice this week.  It’s been a good week.

Today we went to Honda-Ya in Little Tokyo.   I had been in bed all day trying to catch up on some writing and felt quite eager for the company of good friends.  Nancy drove for over an hour to meet us which is amazing.  We ate:

agedashi tofu, crab shumai, salmon skin salad, gingko nuts, green onion yakitori, a spider roll, nasu-miso, and ume-shiso red snapper tempura.

Afterwards we went for frozen yogurt at this place called Cherry On Top.  Apparently there was some sort of competition going on for the prettiest yogurt.  If you arrange your self-serve yogurt nicely enough they’ll take a picture and you can win $50.  Apparently our yogurt was not very impressive because they didn’t even ask to take a picture.  I feel like there was so many things going on at this yogurt place–they had fantastic pink leather booths, orb like plastic chairs with ass indentations (so your bottom won’t slip around in the round seat??) , and an amenities list that included the use of their nintendo games.  Pictured above is Nancy and Lan taking advantage of the amenities.  Not to mention the yogurt photo competition.  Also the cashier was super excited about giving us free samples and offering us board games.  The experience was overwhelming in a good way.  It felt like the Disneyland of frozen yogurt.

Happy Birthday Janice Lee!

Janice didn’t have her usual whiskey & pie birthday party so I baked it into pie form! Very tart apples, dulce de leche, and bourbon.  I also made some hand pies with the leftover apple filling.  I like the way the dulce de leche leaked out of a few of the pies.
